Introduction
Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic process, dating back almost 180 years, it was discovered by Sir John Frederick William Herschel and pioneered by Anna Atkins. Atkins was an English botanist and photographer and is often considered to be the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images.
The popularity of cyanotypes has endured to this day, the simplicity and effective contrast of blue and white images have remained a favourite process for photographers and artists alike. It is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
What to expect
In this workshop you will be guided through the process of making cyanotype prints, all materials will be provide and you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of papers & brushes. You will learn how to safely mix raw chemicals, coat, expose and develop your cyanotype prints. You will receive an information sheet with advice and links to websites where you can order supplies and find inspiration.
Although materials are provided you are very welcome to bring additional materials such as dried pressed flowers leaves, feathers, lace, or any item that can be pressed flat. You will also be able to collect a limited range of wild flowers and foliage from the surrounding area too.
If like me you’re a bit old fashioned remember to bring a notebook and pen so you can make additional notes along the way. You may want to bring a folder to carry your prints home.
What to wear
For the workshop, liquid cyanotype can splash and stain so I would advise wearing an old shirt or apron - basically something you don’t mind getting dirty. Also layers are best as we will be working indoors and outside, weather permitting.
